1. Do not exceed the pressure or temperature limits in this instruction manual, nor any applicable code or standard limitations.

 

2. Minimum steam velocity is a function of several application parameters and may be adjusted upward or downward from this standard.If upstream velocity is lower than 9.1meters per second, a liner will be added in the header of steam in order to improve the system, i.e. to increase the steam velocity at the point of water injection.

 

 

Structure:

 

Main steam system piping (Figures 1 and 3) 

1. Minimum straight pipe downstream: The desuperheater requires a minimum of15 feet [4.6 meters] of straight pipe from the valve installation to the first bend downstream.

2. Minimum straight pipe upstream: The desuperheater requires a minimum of 6 diameters of straight pipe upstream [Min 2 meters].

3. Pipe bends should be long radius type to aid in keeping the steam/water vapor mixture in suspension until evaporation is complete.

4. Avoid using branch lines between the desuperheater and the downstream temperature sensor.

5. Minimum distance to the downstream temperature sensor is 40 feet [12 meters].

6. The temperature sensor should be mounted in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendation. The sensor should not be mounted in an elbow or pipe bend.

 

 

 Steam pipe mounting orientation (Figure 1) 

1. The desuperheater must be mounted at 90 degrees to the steam line for all orientations of steam flow.

2. The vertical-up (12 o’clock) position of the actuator is preferred in a horizontal steam line. If the desuperheater is installed in other than the vertical up position then the actuator should be supported. 

3. The desuperheater must be installed such that the spray nozzles are facing downstream, i.e. the water spray direction must be in the same direction as the steam flow.

 

 

Cooling water supply and connection (Figure 1) 

1. The cooling water should be clean, filtered condensate or boiler feed water.

2. We recommends that the cooling water line include a shut-off valve and a strainer with .010” [0.25mm] perforation, or equal mesh, sized for the flow rate requirements.

3. The water pressure at the inlet to the desuperheater should be per the ZOOLV certified sizing sheet. 

4. The water flange connection has a specific orientation to the direction of water spray(see Fig.1). The water spray direction must be in the same direction as the steam flow.

  

 

Typical control loop 

A typical control loop is illustrated in figure 1. A temperature sensor (TE) measures changes in temperature and transmits a signal to a remote temperature-indicating controller or distributed control system (DCS). The output signal from the controller is sent to the positioner on the desuperheater. The positioner output signal is pipedto the actuator, which strokes the stem/plug of the desuperheater. A decline stem opens the desuperheater to allow additional water flow.
